Why Fall Is the Best Season for Running

There’s something special about running in the fall. The air gets crisp, the leaves turn vibrant, and suddenly those runs you dreaded in the summer heat become something to look forward to.

One of the biggest perks? The weather. Say goodbye to sweltering humidity and hello to cool, comfortable temperatures—perfect for running. Studies show runners perform best in the 50–60°F range, and I can definitely feel the difference. My lungs feel clearer, my stride lighter, and I find myself running longer without even trying.

Then there’s the scenery. Fall paints the world in fiery reds, golds, and oranges, turning even your usual route into something beautiful. Running through a park or along a wooded trail feels more like an escape than a workout. It’s also a great way to boost your mood—research has shown that time in nature can ease stress and lift your spirits. I often slow down just to take it all in.

And let’s not forget the motivation this season brings. Maybe it’s the fresh-start feeling of back-to-school season or the desire to finish the year strong, but fall always gets me setting new running goals. According to a survey by the Road Runners Club of America, 65% of runners feel more inspired this time of year. It’s the perfect moment to increase your mileage, test your speed, or sign up for a local race.

Speaking of races, fall is full of them—from fun runs to charity 5Ks to scenic half-marathons. The energy at these events is contagious, and running alongside others always gives me that extra push. Plus, being part of a community—cheering each other on, swapping stories—makes running feel less like a solo sport and more like a shared experience.

Fall also brings drier air and less humidity, which makes a big difference. No more feeling bogged down and drenched in sweat by mile two. I find I can focus more on enjoying the run and less on battling the elements.

So whether you’re a longtime runner or just starting out, fall is the perfect time to hit the pavement or trail. The weather’s great, the views are stunning, and there’s a spark in the air that makes every run feel meaningful.

Lace up, head outside, and soak it all in—this season was made for running.
