How Little You Actually Need to Start Running

Running is one of the simplest and most accessible forms of exercise. You don’t need a gym membership, expensive equipment, or a personal trainer shouting “PUSH THROUGH THE PAIN” in your ear. In fact, you barely need anything at all. Let’s break it down.

Shoes: The Only Real Investment (and Even Then…)

Yes, a decent pair of running shoes is the one thing worth spending money on, but even that doesn’t mean shelling out hundreds of dollars. Plenty of great running shoes go on sale online, and if you’re not picky about last season’s colors, you can score some serious deals. Just make sure they fit well and provide enough support—your knees will thank you later.

No Watch? No Problem.

You don’t need a fancy GPS watch with a heart rate monitor and a built-in AI coach telling you that you’re slacking. Free apps like Strava, MapMyRun, or even your phone’s built-in fitness tracker can log your runs just fine. And if you don’t care about pace or distance? Just run until you feel like stopping. Revolutionary concept, right?

Your Old T-Shirt Will Do Just Fine

You don’t need high-tech, sweat-wicking, aerodynamic, anti-chafing, space-age fabric to go for a run. That old college T-shirt and a pair of shorts will work just fine. Sure, technical gear has its perks, but you’re not breaking land speed records. If you’re comfortable, you’re good to go. (Okay, maybe avoid jeans.)

Hydration: Water Is Free

Sports drinks promise to fuel your run with electrolytes, carbohydrates, and magic. Unless you're running a marathon, plain water will do the trick. And guess what? Most of us have access to it—for free! Fill up a bottle from the tap, and you’re ready to roll.

Bonus: You Don’t Even Need a Gym

Unlike other workouts that require weights, machines, or a membership, running is just about stepping outside and moving. Trails, sidewalks, parks—wherever there’s ground, you can run. No monthly fees required.

The Bottom Line

Starting to run doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. A decent pair of shoes, a phone to track your progress (if you care), comfy clothes, and some water—boom, you’re all set. So don’t overthink it. Lace up, step outside, and just start moving. Your future self will thank you (after the soreness wears off).
